Activities by days
Day 1 – Arrival to Rome or Pescara
Travel by train from Rome or Pescara to Sulmona. You will be met on arrival and transferred to the village of Cansano. After an introduction from a local guide to the weekend’s activities, you will continue by 4x4 to the mountain hut. After dinner experience an evening session of wolf howling.
Day 2 - Full day guided walk in search of wolves
Your first day’s guided walk will take you in search of the wolves’ trails, looking for their tracks on the snow and listening to their howls. If you are lucky you may be able to observe these fascinating creatures through a spotting scope and binoculars provided by the guides. At night after a hearty meal there is the opportunity to use infra-red video cameras and camera traps as the wolves often pass close to the hut during the night.
Day 3 – Full day guided walk in search of wolves
With some knowledge of the wolves whereabouts, today’s guided walk may depart straight from the hut or you may be transferred by vehicle to and from the walking areas around Campo di Giove and Piano di Cerreto. As you search for the wolves look out for other wildlife including the rare Appenine chamois which can be seen high up in the mountains. This evening enjoy another tasty meal prepared by your guides as you settle by the fire and recount your tales with your fellow travellers.
The exact itinerary is dependent on snow conditions.
Day 4 - Self-guided walk, return to Rome
Return to Rome today and your onward flight back home.
