They will help you maximise your understanding of the region, the mountains and the nature you can expect to see during the remainder of your stay in the area. The walk may be as part of a small group or more private. In the evening you are free to discover some of the tasty delicacies of Abruzzo mountain cuisine.
Day 3 - Exploring the Orfento Valley with walking route notes
Now with some knowledge of the topography you can follow one of a number of the many trails from our self-guided walking notes. Perhaps you will enjoy a low-level walk through the Orfento Gorge with its limestone cliffs and beech forests or you may also wish to climb higher on the mountains to discover the upland meadows or even the rocky tops. Each altitude having its own distinct flora and fauna. Whilst high on the mountains the rare Appenine chamois can be seen, lower down in the meadows and forests are bears and Appenine wolf and their main prey, roe deer; although casual encounters are unlikely with bears and wolves.
Day 4 - Self-guided walk, return to Rome
Before returning to Rome there is time for a final morning walk, in the spring and summer seasons stay out on the grassy meadows which are full of flowers, butterflies and other insects. During the autumn the forests show their magnificent colours in the mountains.
