What to see

Raised bogs

The Cepkeliai educational path (1.5 km) showcases diverse habitats of the Cepkeliai wetland as raised bogs and continental dunes. From the observation tower along the path you will have a stunning view of the vast areas of wetland enveloping countless dry, forested islands.

Natural meadows, wetlands

In the vicinity of Marcinkonys village, Girinis (3.6 km) and Zackagiris (4.8 km and 13 km) circular routes  offer an excellent possibility to observe the whole range of habitats present in the area, from natural meadows and pastures, small wetlands and all the different types of forests to traditional agricultural landscapes.

Peculiar natural phenomena

The area abounds in peculiar natural phenomena such as the scarps of the River Ula or “Ula’s Eye”,  a spring bubbling out onto the surface with iron-filled blackish water 50 meters away and 2 meters above the level of the river itself.

Traditional architecture, customs and crafts

Musteika is one of the most archaic village of foresters with traditional architecture, habits and crafts  in Lithuania. Make sure you visit the Beekeeping Museum and the Cognitive path in the Musteika forest, where you may easily come across a wood grouse, a black grouse, or rare species of woodpeckers.

What to do

Cepkeliai-Dzūkija National Park offers an unforgettable experience of nature: whether you choose to roam the land on foot or decide to get around on a bicycle, the sight of the untouched wetlands, the atmoshphere of the old villages scattered in woods, or the small meadows and pastures you chance upon in the forests rich in mushrooms will all be equally special.

Hiking

The Park has four pedestrian trails. The Girinis (3.6 km) and the Zackagiris (4.8 km and 13 km circular routes) paths begin in Marcinkonys. Not far from the village, by the northwestern edge of the Čepkeliai Reserve, an educational path of 1.5 km acquaints visitors with the unique nature of the Dzūkija dunes and the Čepkeliai bog. Looking out from the watch-tower, gorgeous wide spaces of the bog lay open to the eye. For those who would like to experience the marsh from close-up, a foot-bridge is laid across it. This path may only be visited with an accompanying staff member of the National Park. Most of the forests of Dzukija NP, however, are open to the public for short or longer walks, in quest of the hidden wonders of nature there.

Cycling

Cyclists will find impressive swinging bridges spanning over the River Merkys, forest paths leading to the continental dunes, and a large variety of locations worthy of visiting. The park offers three bicycle routes, the most popular one being a 27–kilometer course starting from Marcinkonys. It runs along blossoming meadows through the valley of the Skroblus River and the village of Kapiniskes - a real example of harmony created by nature and people together.

Kayaking

The Ūla is one of the most picturesque Lithuanian rivers flowing via ancient villages of Dzūkija, hidden in the heart of the Gudų forest. It is famous for its impressive slopes and loops. A fast-flowing stream erodes and washes away the slopes. Here and there undermined new steep slopes and sand exposures open. Forest trees fall down from the eroded slopes into the river blocking its way. Numerous snags and logs lying across the river make kayaking more difficult but more challenging and adventurous at the same time.

Kayaking on the Ula river

Kayaking on the Ula river is a great way to explore the National Park. It can also be combined with visiting villages on the banks of the river.

Walking in valleys
