Oulanka: grant for sustainable

tourism

Oulanka National Park has the potential to be certified as a PAN Park in the near future. To prepare solid ground for truly sustainable tourism, national park managers have started a project to strengthen the involvement and commitment of local stakeholders and national authorities. The project will be realised this year with the support of PAN Parks’ Small Grants Fund.

Key element in the project is to update the National Park’s sustainable tourism development strategy with a special emphasis on the region surrounding the actual park, as required by the PAN Parks Principle 4. This work will be accomplished in a series of round-table meetings with local stakeholders to ensure that the steps taken towards certification will safeguard local tourism income in the long run. An increase in the tourism enterprises’ awareness of the PAN Parks concept and the marketing opportunities it offers to Oulanka, will prepare the way for the fulfillment of PAN Parks Principle 5 on partnerships. For this, the National Park is organising a seminar for people working in the tourist industry and locals under the banner “Oulanka - a PAN Park”. The event will take place in June, at the re-juvinated visitor centre.
