Good progress in Bieszczady in 2004

Certified PAN Park Bieszczady in Poland has made improvements in conservation and visitor management during 2004, and the park has developed a Sustainable Tourism Development Strategy (STDS) – stated verifiers who visited the Polish park for annual monitoring and verification.

Tatra swept by powerful windstorm

Tatra National Park, which has just started dialogue with the PAN Parks Foundation and is preparing to sign the letter of intent for verification, suffered widespread damage after a powerful windstorm. Park officials are committed to restoring the park in a sustainable manner and are still interested in moving towards PAN Parks verification.

Mediterranean countries lag behind in protecting Europe's nature

Uncontrolled tourism is now one of the greatest dangers to the natural world in the Mediterranean region as its protected areas are faring poorly in leading visitors around sensitive sectors and seem less informed about the impact tourists can have on nature than other parks in the rest of Europe. This is the main conclusion of a new study commissioned by the WWF-funded PAN Parks Foundation which has been presented at its annual Europe's Wilderness Days conference in Monti Sibillini National Park, Umbria, Italy on 9 October.

Successful PAN Parks verification audit
27 August 2004
 

The audit of PAN Parks verification system was successful, showing that it has a robust management system with clear and well recorded procedures, while the main challenges for PAN Parks are to move from ecology-based criteria to sustainable tourism, according to an internal audit of the verification systems conducted by Xavier Font, from Leeds Metropolitan University.
