Verification: lessons learnt

The verifiers and conservation staff of PAN Parks met in Petronell, Austria to discuss the experiences which were learnt during the first summer of verification. These discussions gave rise to needed updates and adaptations of the verification process and the PAN Parks Principles and Criteria.

His Majesty King Karl Gustav of Sweden on PAN Parks

On the occasion of opening Fulufjället as a national park and the PAN Parks ceremony, we had the pleasure of greeting His Majesty King Karl Gustav of Sweden, who is himself very much interested in nature conservation and environmental issues, not only as our distinguished guest but he also took on handing over the PAN Parks certificates. In an interview His Majesty shared his views on conservation and tourism and the activity of PAN Parks.

Report on potential PAN Parks

Press release

New research prepared by PAN Parks reveals that of some 3,000 protected areas surveyed in 39 European countries, 134 have the potential to become PAN Parks in their current status.

International PAN Parks Launch
17 September 2002
 

On 17 September after successful verification Bieszczady, Fulufjäet and Oulanka National Parks were formally presented the first PAN Parks certificates by His Majesty King Karl Gustav of Sweden. The ceremony is one of the events of the International PAN Parks Launch representing a milestone in the project's history.

Successful verification in 3 national parks

In September Bieszczady, Fulufjäet and Oulanka National Parks will be the first protected areas to receive the PAN Parks certificate after successful verification. After doing some desk research verification teams visited the areas in the last 3 months to check if the national parks meet all requirements set by the PAN Parks P&C.

Zoltán Kun, new Director for PAN Parks

In March 2002 Zoltán Kun was appointed Executive Director of the PAN Parks Foundation. He took over this position after he had been working with PAN Parks since the beginning of the project as Conservation Manager. Under his leadership the PAN Parks Foundation has moved its head office from the Netherlands to Győr, Hungary.

Green light for Fulufjället National Park

Fulufjället, Sweden submitted its application for PAN Parks verification after on 24 April 2002 the Swedish Parliament had approved the establishment of Fulufjället National Park.
