  Natural features

  • Caves: Grotta del Cavallone or Figlia di Iorio, and nearby Grotta del Bue which dominates the gorge of Taranta Peligna, Grotta Nera, Grotta dei Faggi, Grotta Scura and Grotta dei Piccioni in the Valle dell’Orta, Grotta degli Orsi Volanti and Grotta del Colle at Rapino
  • Orta river: canyon
  • Breathtaking views: are offered from the splendid karstic upland plains known as the Altipiani Maggiore d’Abruzzi and sevaral of the peaks

Cultural sights

  • This beautiful landscape has been long established as the centre of the religious and cultural life in the region.
  • Several hermitages, monasteries and churches including
    - the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and
    - the Church of San Tommaso with its 13th century architraves and rose-windows.
  • After the hermits, Majella became a hiding place of popular heroes and bandits. You can still find the rock carvings on the so-called "Tavola dei Briganti.” 

Things to do

Hiking in the park
The park offers an elaborated network of paths for different types of visitors. There are interpretation trails and adventurous tourists can undertake a hiking tour to one of the remote hermitages built on steep limestone cliffs.

Botanical gardens
There are two beautiful botanical gardens. The gardens display not only the amazing floristic diversity of the park - including elements from the Alps, Pyrenees, Balkan and the Arctic - but even offer to buy seedlings of many plants as a special souvenir. The eastern part of the park is characterized by high altitude plains, extended beech woods, and big wild gorges carved by karstic rivers.

Thermal waters
Caramanico Terme, the renowned spa of thermal waters is located inside the national park.

Historic and architectural sites
The region is rich of traditional and historical sites. There are dozens of historically and architecturally important churches and monasteries.

Museums
There is a wide offer of museums in the region. These offer excellent exhibitions of among others; nature, archaeology, agriculture and traditional arts like ceramics.
