The national park lies in the highest section of the Balkan (Stara Planina) Mountains, above 500 m. It stretches on an east-west axis for approximately 85 km (with an approximate width of 10 km).

Short history

Central Balkan National Park (CBNP) was established in 1991 for the conservation of the unique nature of the Central Stara Planina (Balkan) Mountains as well as for the preservation of local culture and customs. It is situated in the highest and most beautiful part of the Middle Balkan Mountains.
There are 9 nature reserves (IUCN category I) on the territory of the park, occupying 28% of its area. Four of the reserves are Biosphere Reserves and preserve biotopes unique for Europe.
CBNP includes forested areas totalling 44 000 ha and highland pastures, meadows, bushes and rock formations covering an area of 27 669 ha. The park lies in the territory of 8 administrative districts and 32 municipalities.
