Short history

Thanks to the support of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature and the German Government, the national park was officialy created in 1995.  Prior to this date, the area had been protected by both Georgia in the Middle Ages, and the Russian Empire in the 19th century.  A large portion of the area was fenced in and the felling of trees and hunting without permission was forbidden.
