Short history

The population in the Bieszczady Mountains was once so dense it could be called over-populated. World War I and II emptied the mountains of its human inhabitants.
Eventually people began to return to Bieszczady. Still, the human influence on nature is low. The first people to return to the Bieszczady Mountains were foresters, wilderness tourists were first allowed to visit the area in the 1950s.
Bieszczady National Park was established in 1973 with an area of 59,55 sq. km. It protected then only a few patches of the most valuable areas - fragments of mountain meadows and surrounding forest. The park was enlarged four times (1989, 1991, 1996, 1999).
