Siberian jay is just one of the many bird species in the park
PAN Parks Wilderness in Fulufjället is a unique example of a homogeneous, unfragmented piece of wilderness in the Scandinavian mountains. The wilderness area provides an excellent example of a boreal forest ecosystem providing homeland for Scandinavian animals such as the brown bear, wolves, lynx and moose. The most extensive fields of lichens - not damaged by the grazing of semi-domestic reindeers - can be found in the centre of the wilderness area - at the top of the table mountain.
Flora
The combination of climate and the meagre sand bedrock has given rise to peculiar vegetation. Large areas of the plateau are covered with a thick carpet of reindeer lichen which is unique as it has not been grazed by reindeer or any other domestic animals for a long period.
The worlds’ oldest tree grows in Fulufjället NP, a 9550 year old spruce. Ancient forests cover the mountain sides with huge and old spruces and pines.
In the lush valleys you can find a lot of different flowers, for example orchids.
Flagship species: Reindeer lichens (Cladonia sp.) 35 species
Fauna
The lush forests of the park provide homeland for Scandinavian wilderness species such as the brown bear, wolves, lynx and moose. Fulufjället claims to have the richest birdlife in the Dalarna region including the bluethroat, ’the nightingale of the mountains,’ the rare gyrfalcon, the largest falcon on earth and the emblem of the park: the Siberian jay.
Flagship species: elk, brown bear, lynx, beaver, gyrfalcon, Siberian jay (the emblem of the park), golden eagle
